Three cormorants cloak,

as if in conspiracy,

close in veiled light;

high water holds me distant

from the jet of idle chat.

There is often a cormorant on Portobello beach, perched on a marker out in the water.  Today, there were three together on the breaker at the farthest Joppa end of the promenade.  It was a rare and special sight at this deserted, darkest time of the year.  The poem which sits alongside the image follows the convention of the Japanese tanka poetic form with 31 syllables.
